Introduction to FTP

Welcome to the official help site for the Terra Nova FTP site. The goal of this site is to help those users that might be new to the File Transfer Protocol have a hassle free user experience.

FTP or File Transfer Protocol is used to send large files from one computer to another over the internet. There are several ways to access an FTP server. Originally, users would use a command-line utility, like the ms-dos command prompt or terminal in mac-os. The command line interface is a little dated and clunky to use, but always works. You do have to have experience in the command prompt to be comfortable using this method.

On the other hand, most user-friendly method is to use a client application. The best one I've found is called FileZilla. It runs either on a PC or a Mac, and is made by Mozilla, the same people that make the popular FireFox web browser. Some web browsers are able to connect to FTP servers, but usually connect as read only. This means you can only get files off the server.

Basically, the best method is to find an FTP client that works on your system. To connect to an FTP server, you need 3 pieces of information.

  1. The host name  (This is the address of the server.)
  2. A user name  (To identify yourself)
  3. A password (To authenticate your identity)

With these pieces you can log in to an FTP server.
